A moment of relief, just when it was needed.

By Christmas Eve, Kelly and her family were completely exhausted. Her youngest son, Xavier, was just two and a half when he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis — a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. Since then, hospital had become a constant presence in their lives. Appointments, admissions and long stretches of waiting blurred together, along with the worry that came with each visit.

That night at Perth Children’s Hospital marked Xavier’s second admission in a single month. The family felt worn down in every sense; physically, emotionally and mentally. Then, unexpectedly, the Clown Doctors arrived.
In the middle of the stress and uncertainty, they brought something Kelly hadn’t heard in weeks: Xavier’s giggle.

Xavier’s diagnosis came after a long and difficult road. From the day he was born, Kelly sensed something wasn’t right. Despite her concerns being repeatedly dismissed, she trusted her instincts. When Xavier was finally diagnosed in late 2023, he was still a toddler, too young to explain how he was feeling, yet already enduring pain, discomfort and invasive treatments.

Since then, hospital visits have been frequent and unpredictable. Gastroenterology appointments every few months, emergency admissions when his condition flares, needles, tubes and unfamiliar faces — all of it has been a source of fear and distress. For Kelly and her family, the emotional toll has been immense.

That’s what made the Clown Doctors’ presence so powerful.

Their calm, playful energy gently cut through the heaviness of the moment. They didn’t rush. They didn’t overwhelm. They simply met Xavier where he was, with soft silliness, gentle humour and a red nose he refused to part with for days afterwards. It was a moment of relief the family hadn’t realised how desperately they needed.

“They didn’t just entertain,” Kelly says. “They brought a sense of normalcy, joy and connection when we were completely worn down.”

Kelly’s family were already familiar with the Clown Doctors. Years earlier, when her daughter was diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, their regular visits had brought light into another frightening chapter of their lives. What continues to surprise her is their timing, an uncanny ability to arrive on the days when worry feels overwhelming and a smile feels impossible.

For Xavier, the impact is immediate. On days when the Clown Doctors visit, his mood shifts. He becomes more engaged, less consumed by fear. Over time, those moments have helped change how he experiences hospital, no longer just a place of pain, but somewhere something good might happen too.

That emotional shift matters. For children who require ongoing medical care, repeated hospital stays can build anxiety that lingers long after treatment ends. By creating moments of laughter, connection and calm, Clown Doctors help soften those experiences for children, and for the families who walk alongside them.

Today, Xavier continues his treatment while reaching new milestones, including starting full‑time school. And for Kelly, the presence of Clown Doctors has made an immeasurable difference.

The Clown Doctors’ work is made possible through the generosity of the community from individual donors to philanthropic and corporate supporters. Without government funding, this support is essential to bringing joy and emotional relief to families like Kelly’s. “If I had one wish for Xavier,” she says, “it would be for him to always find moments of happiness, no matter what challenges he faces. The Clown Doctors have played a huge role in giving him that, and I hope they can continue bringing laughter to other children who need it just as much.”

Right now, more families like Kelly’s are facing long hospital stays or repeat hospital visits, unexpected diagnoses, and overwhelming uncertainty. But with your support, the Clown Doctors can bring laughter where it’s unexpected, yet most needed.
