Celebrating 10 Years of Laughter Care at Bankstown City Aged Care

Recently, we were delighted to celebrate a special milestone: 10 years of Laughter Care at Bankstown City Aged Care (BCAC).

For the past decade, our Laughter Care Specialists have visited residents each week, bringing warmth, wit and a whole lot of heart to BCAC. Through music, play, storytelling, and gentle improvised interactions, they help foster meaningful relationships and bring light-hearted moments to everyday life.

The Power of Connection

Reflecting on the partnership, our Artistic Director David Symons shared a story from the early days of the program. The story captures the vision behind BCAC CEO Deb Keys’ decision to welcome Laughter Care into the community.

One of our Laughter Care Specialists, Sonny, was introduced to a resident who was often distressed. The gentleman, whom we’ll call “Bob”, rarely received visitors and was known to be withdrawn, unhappy and at times angry. Staff regularly experienced challenging interactions and Deb knew there had to be another way to support him.

With patience, care and imagination, Sonny began visiting Bob. Rather than trying to change him, Sonny met him where he was, acknowledging his feelings and gradually building trust through stories, songs, jokes and playful conversation. Staff were encouraged to join in too, becoming part of the shared experience.

Over time, something remarkable happened.

Bob began to smile more. He laughed. He developed positive relationships with staff and looked forward to social interactions. After around a dozen visits, the anger and sadness that had once defined many of his days had softened. Instead of greeting staff with scowls, he began greeting them with blown kisses.

For David, the story perfectly illustrates the power of a human-centred approach to care.

‘Through care, imagination and dedication, Bob, and the staff around him, experienced more joy in their lives,’ he reflected.

Celebrating a Decade of Laughter Care

To mark the 10-year milestone, residents, family members, staff and Laughter Care Specialists came together for a heartfelt celebration. Filled with laughter, memories and shared stories, the event was a wonderful reflection of the positive impact that meaningful engagement can have on quality of life.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone at Bankstown City Aged Care for their ongoing partnership and commitment to creating a warm and supportive community for residents. We are proud to have shared the past decade alongside you and look forward to many more years of connection, laughter and meaningful moments together.
