Compassionate Clowning Workshops: Elevating Care Through Humour and Connection

As vulnerability grows across our communities, the need for care that is deeply human has never been greater. To address this, our Clown Doctors took part in Compassionate Clowning workshops led by internationally recognised expert Magdalena Schamberger. The workshops deepen our Clown Doctors’ connection with vulnerable and neurodivergent groups.

This February and March, Clown Doctors Australia was proud to deliver a series of Compassionate Clowning workshops led by Magdalena Schamberger, an internationally recognised expert in healthcare and compassionate clowning. These workshops are designed to deepen our Clown Doctors’ connection with people experiencing vulnerability, at a time when the need for compassionate, human‑centred care has never been greater.

The Changing Landscape of Care

Across paediatric settings, our Clown Doctors are encountering increasing behavioural complexity. In aged care and hospital environments, rising rates of dementia, cognitive decline and social isolation are placing pressure on residents, families and care teams. Hospitals are also experiencing bottlenecks as older patients wait for long‑term aged care placements or home care plans, often going long periods without significant social or emotional interaction.

Why Specialist Training Matters

It’s within this increasingly complex care landscape that intentional, specialist training becomes essential. Magdalena’s workshops focus on strengthening authentic connection through playfulness, presence and emotional attunement, particularly when working with vulnerable and neurodivergent groups. These include people living with dementia, children on the autism and ADHD spectrums, and individuals with complex needs or lived experience of trauma.

Inside the Compassionate Clowning Workshops

Through hands-on, experiential learning, our Clown Doctors explored how to balance clarity and confusion, stillness and rhythm, imagination and reality, while developing the sensitivity needed to meet each person where they are. The workshops emphasise the power of pacing, repetition and pausing, allowing space for connection to unfold in ways that feel safe, respectful and deeply human.

Extending Care Beyond Paediatrics

This training is particularly significant as we continue to expand Laughter Care into hospitals across the country, a key priority for Clown Doctors Australia. While Clown Doctors are best known for bringing laughter to children in hospitals, Laughter Care extends this work to older adults and adults experiencing vulnerability, ensuring our impact truly spans cradle to grave.

Reflections from the Workshop

One of our Clown Doctors reflected on the impact of the workshop, saying:

“A very precious two days that will reach far into our clown work. Magdalena is a great teacher and the work we covered, the discoveries and insights, invaluable and practical. It has been such a joy to dive deeper into the work with such a sensitive, fun, generous, creative, and relevant teacher.”

These workshops mark an important step in elevating Laughter Care as a program that sits alongside Clown Doctors, strengthening our ability to enhance wellbeing through the uplifting power of humour. We’ll share how Clown Doctors are putting these learnings into practice in the next Giggle Gazette.
