Bringing light to the Adolescent and Young Adult Hospice
Something remarkable has been happening at the Adolescent and Young Adult Hospice (AYAH) in Manly. With warmth, intuition and deep respect, our Clown Doctors have become part of the AYAH family, bringing lightness, connection and moments of joy to young people and their loved ones during the hardest of times.
For the past two years, a unique and vibrant partnership has blossomed at the Adolescent and Young Adult Hospice (AYAH) in Manly. What began as a generous fundraising initiative has evolved into a cornerstone of our holistic care model, proving that laughter and lightness are essential companions to clinical excellence.
The AYAH: A specialised facility for young adults with life-limiting illness
As Australia’s first dedicated facility for 16 to 30-year-olds living with life-limiting illnesses, the AYAH provides a specialised environment that bridges the gap between paediatric and adult care. Our mission is to provide world-class clinical support while fostering a sense of normalcy, dignity, and community. Recognising that our patients often face complex physical and emotional challenges, we strive to offer experiences that transcend the traditional medical boundaries.
From Stryde4 to fortnightly smiles
The relationship with Clown Doctors Australia was sparked two years ago following their participation in the Stryde4 event. The foundation’s incredible fundraising efforts were specifically aimed at introducing the renowned Clown Doctors to AYAH.
Initially, there was a professional curiosity: would the Clown Doctor model, often associated with younger children, resonate with adolescents and young adults?
“We were initially unsure if it would be age-appropriate,” the AYAH team reflects. “However, many of our patients are cognitively younger than their birth age, and as it turns out, the program has been fantastic across the board. Almost everyone is open to laughter and some fun when the Clown Doctors arrive.”
A tailored, patient-centred approach
Now visiting fortnightly, Clown Doctors have become a seamless part of the AYAH family. Their success lies in their high level of intuition and flexibility. Before each visit, our team provides a detailed brief on which patients are in residence and who might appreciate a visit.
Clown Doctors don’t just “put on a show”; they enter the space with a deep respect for the clinical and emotional environment. They are remarkably sensitive to the individual needs of our patients, adapting their interactions for those who may be:
- Sound or light sensitive
- Easily overstimulated
- In need of quiet, sensory engagement
Whether it’s through music, bubbles, or gentle sensory items, they quickly identify what makes a patient “light up,” while also possessing the professional maturity to recognise when a patient needs space.
Supporting the whole family unit
The impact of Clown Doctors Australia extends far beyond the patient’s bedside. In a hospice setting, the complexity of illness is shared by the entire family. Clown Doctors provide much-needed moments of “lightness” for siblings and parents, offering a brief reprieve from the weight of their circumstances and helping families reconnect through shared joy.
Beyond their regular visits, they are a staple at our major community milestones, including:
- Annual Christmas Celebrations
- Christmas in July
- Special on-site activities and events
A professional and enduring partnership
From an administrative perspective, the collaboration has been exemplary. Clown Doctors Australia maintains a gold standard of professionalism, with consistent check-ins to ensure their approach aligns with our evolving needs.
“We are incredibly proud to have Clown Doctors Australia as a partner,” says the AYAH Community Partnerships Manager. “They have added an extra dimension of care that sits beautifully alongside our clinical model. We can’t thank them enough for their ongoing support, and we look forward to many more years of making a difference together.”
Through the simple, human act of a smile, Clown Doctors Australia continues to help us ensure that even in the most difficult times, there is always room for a moment of light.
